On-campus graduate housing is available through HDH Graduate and Family Housing. Students have two years to live in graduate housing and may take advantage of the two years at any time while they are a graduate student at UCSD. If you plan on moving with a significant other, you are able to rent an apartment with them as long as you show proof of a committed relationship (i.e. joint bank account/credit card). Also, if you have a family or are in an approved priority program, you have the option of living on campus for more than two years.

Nuevo East, Nuevo West, Mesa Nueva, One Miramar, and Mesa are all within walking distance of each other within a large graduate housing complex. The complex includes a pool, hot tub, coffee shop, mini brewery, ping pong tables, and plenty of barbecues. Coast is a separate apartment complex in a different area, but is within walking distance to the beach.

The vast majority of first- and second-year students typically choose to live in graduate housing because of the convenience and proximity to other classmates. We have included a brief summary of the various graduate housing options available below.

Mesa Nueva offers studios, one-bedrooms, two-bedrooms, and three-bedrooms. Apartments (except for studios) are unfurnished. Parking is included for all residents.

Pros: 15 minute walk to school, in unit dish washer and laundry machines (except studios), very close to pool/Rough Draft/ Volkan Coffee

Cons: A little bit older buildings

Nuevo East offers one-bedrooms, two-bedrooms, three-bedrooms, and four-bedrooms. Apartments (except for studios) are unfurnished. Parking is included for all residents.

Pros: newest buildings, 15 minute walk to school, large windows/ good apartment layouts

Cons: no in unit laundry/ dishwasher

Nuevo West offers completely furnished apartments that are located in between Mesa Nueva and OMS. This community has studio, 2 bedroom, 4 bedroom, and 6 bedroom apartments.

Pros: new buildings, fully furnished, close to class and Mesa Nueva/OMS/Old Mesa, town-home style (2 floors) available. Parking included.

Cons: no in unit laundry

These two-bedroom apartments are approximately 20 minutes (walking) from the medical school. There is also a shuttle that goes between these apartments and main campus. One Miramar includes free parking for all residents, and the apartments are completely unfurnished.

Pros: balconies

Cons: older buildings, a little further from campus

Mesa tends to be the most popular option for married students and families, though plenty of single students live in Mesa as well. These apartments are also unfurnished and are located right next to One Miramar (~20 minutes walking, or 15-20 minutes via the Mesa shuttle).

Pros: Lots of families around, plenty of grass space, has the biggest rooms, free parking

Cons: Old buildings

This community is located outside of the grad housing complex but is still walking/ biking distance to the medical school (~ 20 minute walk). It is walking distance to the beach and many of the apartments have a view of the ocean.

There is also a shuttle that goes between these apartments and main campus. Coast includes free parking for all residents, and the apartments are completely unfurnished.

Pros: close to the beach/ ocean views, balconies

Cons: older buildings, a little further from campus/ other grad student buildings

Can I have a pet in grad student housing?

YES! There are a ton of dogs and cats within the grad housing complex so you can definitely have pets here if you want.

Where do most med students live?

There are med students in every grad housing complex and off campus, but the majority of first and second year med students live within the grad housing complex (most in Nuevo East/ West and Mesa Nueva with some in OMS).

If there isn't laundry inside of my apartment, where can I do laundry?

There are laundry rooms in almost every building that are easily accessible.

Is there bike storage?

Yes! There are bike racks all over the grad housing complex as well as larger bike lockers. In some buildings, there are indoor bike racks.

What's around the grad housing complex?

There are several restaurants and coffee shops within a few minutes of walking from grad housing. A little bit further (you could walk, but driving is likely easier) are 3 large shopping centers with grocery stores, restaurants, and other shops. University Town Center (UTC) Mall is about a 5 minute drive from grad housing. The area surrounding grad housing is fairly suburban, but we are located very close to multiple freeways that can take you just about anywhere in San Diego very quickly!

Do I need a car? What's the parking like?

You do not need a car, but it may make getting around San Diego a little easier. There are 2 parking structures in the grad student complex for Mesa Nueva/ Nuevo East/ Nuevo West, with another one for OMS. There are separate spots for the Mesa apartments. If you do not have a car, there are ZipCars at grad housing that make it easy to use a car when you need one!
